Founded in 1926, the Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal (APDP) is the oldest diabetes association in the world. As a private institution, its objectives are:
1. The provision of preventive, curative and rehabilitation health care;
2. The social and community integration of people with diabetes, including standing up for their rights;
3. The protection of people with diabetes when needed.
For this 18-month project titled "Eat better, live better" , APDP has joined forces with the International Diabetes Federation and the French Federation Francaise des Diabetiques. The main goal is to explore and promote the role of plant-based diets in managing diabetes, through sustainable and healthy diets. In order to do this, APDP plans to support the practical integration of the concept of territorial diets, such as for example the Mediterranean and/or Nordic diets, into real-world dietary patterns through a social marketing approach. Of course, people with diabetes, healthcare professionals, and policy-makers will be involved to contribute to, and benefit from, scientific and education materials. Hence the project aims to impact how plant-based nutrition is seen, and how options are being presented to Europeans with diabetes and pre-diabetes.
